Denham – Support Our Military!

In CD-10 our current representative, Jeff Denham, consistently posts about supporting our military, supporting our vets, and giving special treatment to those that wish to serve our country through the armed forces.  The only problem with that is that his party’s leader and our current President has just released a barrage of ridiculous tweets banning transgender people from service.

The Republican Party, Denham, DeMartini, and many others, have for years run on a platform of strong military support.  The only problem is that an estimated 15,000 current servicemen and women are transgender and with the proclamation this morning (on twitter of all places) the Commander-In-Chief has turned his back on those people serving our country with honor.  Without any proper information outlined in this “ban,” 45 has also left those service people not knowing if they will now be sent home and removed from service.  Will they be given honorable discharge?  Will they be flogged in the streets?  At this point no one seems to know, not even the Pentagon who when asked for a comment said to “Ask the White House.”

This ban is also coming at a very interesting time when 45 is weak, under attack, and the investigators are closing in on his joke of a mafia family and their Russian collaborators.  Trump’s weak ego means that he needs to shore up support from somewhere and the only people that are still showing strong support for him are the ultra-social conservatives that believe that transgender people are “mentally ill” and “diseased.”  He is under fire and is looking to get a little ego boost in this time of great peril.

Back to Jeff Denham though – our representative to the Federal Government has long claimed to side with military and veterans.  He also has a long history of refusing to stand up to the Trump agenda even though his district clearly wants him to.  By refusing to speak up or vote against various Trump-backed bills, Denham has shown us his true colors.  This is just another taste of that spinelessness and cowardice in the face of his party.  Denham has not spoken up against this ban.  He has not shown his support for the 15,000 acting service people who are transgender, or the many veterans that he may have even served with that also identify as transgender.

Just another case of Denham lying to his constituents to win political points with his party leadership.  He has never wanted to listen to us or the veterans – only those that believe in what his party wants them to believe in.

Taxpayers on the Hook for Fundraiser

Recently the local Republicans held an event where they hosted the right-wing firebrand Ann Coulter to a fundraiser.  This event was blasted by the left, middle, and some on the right as well because of the nature of Ann Coulter and the hateful shtick of a caricature that she portrays in her books and media.  Not only does she actively preach hate towards immigrants, Latinos, and other minorities, but also women and anyone that disagrees with her.

As a constituent of Supervisor Jim DeMartini it absolutely sickens me that this event was basically approved and co-opted by our county board.  I have no problem with a private event and letting people speak their minds, but where the issue lies is that it gave the impression that it was sponsored by the county board.  We have also come to find out that Stanislaus County taxpayers are on the hook for about $68K in police services for this event, which just supports that perception.

Almost any other event in the area requires the event holder to pay for “police services” to cover those costs and take the burden off the local taxpayer – but for some reason, which DeMartini cannot explain thoughtfully, the Republican fundraiser was not equally charged for these police services.  When Jim was confronted about it at a recent board meeting by a concerned and brave citizen, his answer was that it was the fault of the Modesto Bee as they “whipped up the hysteria” around the event and that they were “responsible.”

Jim – I thought you were a Republican?  I thought that Republicans believed in taking responsibility and accountability?  Well maybe it is time for you to accept your nature and the problems you have caused over the years you have served in office.  Maybe it is time for you to listen to your constituents for once instead of your party.  I know you are not used to being held accountable for your actions, but that is changing.  Get used to it.

Patterson Poetry!

Wow!  This is overwhelming and humbling to the entire group.  Our first event that we organized was the Valentine’s Day Love-In.  The point was to be very public and announce to the city of Patterson that we are here and we still believe in peace, love, and unity in a time of great political turmoil and differences.

Our event, which you can read more about by clicking this link, was a huge success in our eyes.  We had a mix of teachers, board members, city council, children, and town elders come out to share in our message.

Even more amazing than that is the fact that we were contacted by a resident that sent us this picture of her poem entitled “Patterson Valentine’s Day ‘Love-In’ 2017” that was recently published by the Modesto Poets Corner.  This is beyond what we had expected.  I love that our event to spread love and unity inspired someone to want to write about the event in a creative and artistic fashion.

So thank you Nancee Kinkaid Maya for sharing this with us…and while nothing is set in stone yet, it is safe to say we are looking to make the Love-In more than just a singular event for Patterson!

Patterson Mobile Office Hours – May

A few members of the PPA showed up this morning (2nd Friday of the month, 10:30 AM) in order to speak to Mr. Denham or his staffer.  It would have been nice to see Mr. Denham, especially since the Congressman was on recess this week and meeting with people all over the valley, but we honestly did not expect him after the well-deserved anger he has faced from valley constituents over the first part of the week.

We did have a conversation with his staffer though, who seemed rather unprepared to face our questions.  He attempted to defend Denham on the false narrative that he was “undecided” on the AHCA for quite awhile between him stating he was at a “no” vote and when he voted “yes” on it.  We brought up that this untrue because we were the ones calling his office and his staff over and over up until the vote and were continually told he was a “no,” but that seemed to fall on deaf ears.

The staffer then attempted to state that Denham turned to “yes” from the last two amendments, which was countered with the fact that those two amendment basically do nothing to make the bill better – a drop in the bucket compared to the cost and need, to which there was little response.

We expressed our displeasure with his condescending nature, over him citing “doctors” for his AHCA support, and his continual lies and attacks on us as “paid protesters from the bay area.”  The fact that he sends out an email stating how nice it was to have open dialogue and conversation, then a week later sends an email to his base accusing us of being “paid protesters” while begging for cash is sickening and proves what kind of politician he is.

While nothing was resolved and his staffer did say he will take our concerns back to the congressman, we know that it will fall on deaf ears.  Denham has already proven that he is rather unconcerned with what is best for his constituents or what we want – he feels he is smarter than everyone else, he knows more than we do, and he is just plain better than all of us.  Denham has shown us nothing other than that he is a slick-talking wannabe farmer who really just exists to toe the line with whatever the party and ol’ 45 want.

Talk to a Progressive – PPA Meetings

One of the purposes of the PPA is to educate people on what and who a progressive is.  Many people hear the term progressive and think we are just left-wing democrats, some call us negative names, and many just don’t know what we are at all.  Do not worry, you are not alone.

Progressives come from all facets of political ideology, but often share some common understanding.  What many people don’t know is that we can often times share common understanding with right-wing politics as well.

With that in mind, do not fret at all to reach out to us via our email or social media links above.  We will return a response as soon as can and if you want to learn more, feel free to come out to one of our full group meetings here in Patterson CA.

Our meetings are held on the second Tuesday night of the month, starting at 6:30 (mingle, drinks) and 7:00 PM (actual meeting) and usually go for an hour or so.  We welcome all kinds, so do not be afraid.  If you are interested to join us, please do not hesitate to reach out for the address and we will be excited to meet you!
